Some say laughter is the best medicine, but music can help heal the soul too. Sometimes all it takes to perk you up when you’re feeling down is a good upbeat song, and no one knows that better than Dr. Paulo Martins who likes to entertain his patients with his music.
Dr. Paulo Martins works at Ribeirao Preto Clinical Hospital in Sao Paulo and brings his ukelele with him to work every day. He brings a smile to the faces of his patients and cheers them up with his songs, but one of his tiniest patients couldn’t stop following him around the hospital when she got a taste of his talent.
Seventeen-month-old Sophia Romao Bueno has an immune system disorder called Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis and she met Dr. Paulo Martins while battling her illness at the hospital. Her disease means that she has spent a lot of her lifetime at the hospital.

The aggressive treatments ravish her little body and she is easily exhausted from the fight, but when she hears Dr. Paulo Martins music, she manages to find the energy to follow him through the hallways and break out into a dance.
For patients that can’t come into the hallways, the doctor walks in and out of their rooms singing, and little Sophia patiently waits for him in the hallway where she continues to follow him on his way. When he discovered her waiting on him this day in particular, he wanted to play something special just for her.
He asked her father, Julliano, what kind of music she likes and he told the doctor that she loves country music. Dr. Paulo Martins breaks into song and you can see her joy as she dances along to the beat with her IV tubing still attached to her little body.

The magical moment for the little one was caught on video and when you watch it below, you will see just how strong the healing power of music can be. For just a brief moment, this brave little girl is able to put her pain aside and delight in the dance.
Check out this beautiful video and be sure to share Sophia enjoying her dance with your friends.
