Dr. Paulo Martins has become beloved by his patients at Ribeirao Preto Clinical Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil for his habit of singing to them. However, he recently got one little superfan who was so enthralled with him that she could not stop following him all over the hospital!

Seventeen-month-old Sophia Romao Bueno has spent much of her life battling a rare immune system disorder that has left her hospitalized a lot of the time. The aggressive treatment of her disorder has taken a major toll on Sophia, and it’s rare that she can find something to enjoy in life.

When Martins brought his ukulele into work to use to entertain patients, Sophia could not get enough of it! The unique sound of the instrument as well as Martins’ soothing singing voice drew Sophia to him. As he walked from room to room to perform for his patients, Sophia followed him around the hospital, lurking at doorways to listen to him.

Once he had finished with his rounds, Martins found Sophia waiting for him. Though she didn’t say a word, he knew she wanted him to perform for her. He didn’t know what to do at first, as he did not know any children’s songs, but Sophia’s dad explained that the little girl actually likes adult music. Her father then suggested Sophia’s favorite song, and thankfully, Martins knew it well!

Sophia could not hide her excitement that Martins was playing a song just for her! Though she was tethered to her IV pole, Sophia was able to sway to the music and dance around to the song. When Martins finished, Sophia just stared at him, silently imploring him to sing another song. He could not say no to the little girl, so he started performing again!

For a few brief moments, Sophia was able to forget the pain of her illness and just be a normal little girl! God bless Martins for giving this little child this amazing gift! There’s nothing quite like the healing power of music.
