Not all animals are treated the way they deserve to be treated and Freddie the chihuahua was a perfect example. For the first nine years of his life, he had been confined to four very cramped walls of a wire cage and had only been used for breeding purposes.

Locked away his entire life, Freddie finally got the chance to be freed when his owner decided that he was too old to breed anymore. The National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) took in Freddie and 34 other dogs from a Midwest puppy mill.

Like most dogs that are rescued from puppy mills, Freddie was extremely shy. He had been neglected for years, so badly that he was missing all of his teeth according to NMDR founder Theresa Strader. She says that spending their life in a cage takes a heavy toll on a dog both emotionally and physically.

She says most of the mill dogs require extensive rehabilitation before they are ready to go home with a family, but Freddy, despite his rough start to life, had maintained his spunk and had a lot of love to give.

Freddie’s adorable personality shined when Theresa gave him his very first bed. You won’t want to miss his amazing reaction to the gift in the video below. For an old dog like Freddie, it is heartbreaking to think that he had been denied even something as basic as a comfortable bed.

When Theresa places the bed on the floor, Freddie didn’t know what to do with it. Even with his tail tucked between his legs in fear, he was still wagging it. Eventually, he snuggled right into the bed and got comfortable.

“Dogs can be more cautious and have no idea what a soft bed is for, but they learn very quickly,” said Theresa. “Freddie snuggled in from the beginning like he knew that this was just one of many perks he will experience now.”

Freddie’s rescuers fear that Freddie won’t be adopted anytime soon because of his age, but for now, he’s at least getting the love and attention, and a comfy bed, that he has always deserved.
