Many children fantasize about finding a long-lost piece of treasure in their backyard. For one man in Staten Island, however, this dream recently became a reality!

For four years, Matthew Emanuel noticed an old rusty box hidden in the tree line of his backyard. He decided to leave the box alone, thinking it was just an old, rusty electrical box.

Finally, Matthew hired some workers to come in and put bamboo in place of where the old trees stood. It was only then that he learned the rusty box was actually a safe. Shocked, Matthew opened up the safe, and he was even more surprised to see that the safe contained a major piece of history.

Inside the safe, Matthew found cash, jewelry, diamonds, precious jade, an engagement ring, gold and much more. He couldn’t believe that a safe with all these valuables in it had been left in his yard!

One of the items in the safe was a piece of paper with an address scribbled on it, and he realized the address belonged to his neighbor. Matthew then went to the neighbor’s house and asked if they had ever been robbed. They responded by saying they had indeed been robbed seven years ago. Matthew went to the police to make sure they were telling the truth, and he found that the neighbors did indeed file a report about a robbery seven years ago for about $52,000 in assets.

Though some would have kept the safe for themselves, Matthew was overjoyed to be able to return it to his neighbors after all these years. He now hopes that this act of kindness will come back to him in a good way! We need more people like Matthew in the world!
