Alicia was driving home from work on an Arkansas highway recently when she noticed an elderly man on a bike. As she got closer to him, she realized that he was carrying a group of disheveled stray dogs in the makeshift trailer behind him, and that he was having a difficult time pedaling.

Though Alicia kept driving that day, she could not get the image of the old man struggling to bike with all those dogs in tow out of her mind, and she promised herself that she would stop to help him if she ever saw him again.

“God must have put this man on that road at that time for a reason, because as I was returning to town I saw him,” she later recounted on Facebook.

This time, Alicia did pull over, and she learned that the man was named Steve and that he had been homeless since 2001. When he was asked about the ten dogs in his trailer, Steve gave Alicia an answer that had her wanting to help him immediately.

In the 14 years he had been homeless, Steve devoted his life to helping animals who were neglected and in need of love. He explained to Alicia that he was on a 2,000-mile journey with his dogs to see his girlfriend in Indiana.

Steve said he felt a kinship with the dogs and that when he was with them, they were all part of a family together.

When Alicia heard Steve’s story, she knew she had to do something to help him and his pack. She took to Facebook to ask animal donors for help, and donations immediately started pouring in!

An animal lover named Kelley volunteered to drive Steve and his dogs to their destination in Indiana. Thanks to the donations, Steve and his pets were also able to stay in motel rooms along the way!

When Steve got to Indiana, he and his girlfriend were connected to an animal activist named Angela, who runs an organization that specifically works with homeless people and their pets.

Angela has helped Steve get a trailer for himself and his dogs so that they will never be homeless again! Touched by the outpouring of love he has received, Steve has remained in touch with Alicia to this day.

“If it wasn’t for every single one of you, this man might still be pedaling down the road not knowing what hardship he might hit next,” Alicia said in thanking all the donors for support.
