Deputy Jeremie Nix had just left work at the Marion County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office and was stopped at a red light when he noticed a car that swerved onto the shoulder next to his cruiser. A woman exited the vehicle holding her baby boy as she frantically tried to get the officer’s attention.

Realizing something was very wrong here, Nix sprang to action.

Nix leaped out of his vehicle and ran over to help Nechole Cromwell, a mother from Gainesville whose baby Kingston had stopped breathing. She told the officer that “he just didn’t look right,” so she was on the way to the hospital with her sister when the baby stopped breathing. Now, Nechole thinks that Nix was sent to that spot on the highway by God that day to help her when she needed it most.

Harrowing dashcam footage shows Nix put Kingston on the ground and start trying to save his life.

“You can tell he’s completely lifeless,” Nix later said. “She just hands him to me and the first words out of her mouth were, ‘Don’t let my baby die.’”

After working on Kingston for a few minutes, Nix was able to get the three month-old breathing again, but he knew the child was not out of the woods yet. Though Nix radioed for an ambulance, he decided that the paramedics would not be able to make it in time, so he would have to take Kingston to the hospital himself.

“I’m not waiting for medics. I’m a half mile from ORC. I’m heading to the emergency room with the baby,” he told dispatch.

“I didn’t have time,” Nix explained. “This baby didn’t have time to wait on an ambulance.”

Nechole and her sister sped to the hospital behind Nix, and by the time they got there, he had already rushed Kingston into the trauma unit. A few long minutes later, Nix reemerged to tell Nechole that Kingston was crying again!

“I knew crying meant that he was breathing, so I was able to actually relax and try to gather myself enough to see about him. I am so blessed,” Nechole said. “I thanked him probably a thousand times, and I wanted the world to know that he was amazing, and I felt like God had him at the right place at the right time, and I’m thankful.”

“In my 17 years of doing this job, that was the most scary, emotional and rewarding day ever,” Nix said. “I remember praying, thanking God for putting me in the right place at the right time for the right reason.”

The sheriff’s office even released a statement applauding Nix for his actions.

“We are happy to report that Baby Kingston is doing very well and doctors say he will make a full recovery! Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix’s actions, Baby Kingston is alive today,” the statement read. “We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and Baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime!”
