The oldest American World War II veteran just turned 112 on Friday, May 11.

Born in 1906, Richard Overton still lives in the house he built 72 years ago in east Austin, Texas. Overton has lived in the house since 1946, and he still spends much of his time smoking cigars and drinking whiskey out on the front porch.

“I feel fine every day,” said Overton. “No pain and no aches.”

Overton fought in World War II from 1940-1945, serving in places such as Guam and Iwo Jima.

After the war ended, Overton worked for the Texas Department of the Treasury. He was married twice, but he has no children.

Overton was invited to the White House on Memorial Day in 2013 to meet Barack Obama, who thanked him for his lifetime of service to our country.

“He’s like a gift to Austin that keeps giving,” said Overton’s friend, Steve Wiener. “He’s a crackerjack. When people sense his humor and playfulness, it just lightens everyone’s step.”

Despite his advanced age, Overton has not slowed down at all! Last month, he traveled on a private jet to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
