Chandler King is your typical 10-year-old kid. She likes playing outside, loves spaghetti, and gets treated to ice cream on occasion by her dad. What sets her apart is the goals and ambitions of this tween Olympic hopeful, and her incredible looking abdominal muscles.

King has nearly 175,000 followers on her Instagram account fitspo, but she fell out of the limelight for several years until a popular fitness trainer brought her back into the spotlight. Massy Arias, the fitness pro, recently shared a photo of herself and King both flashing their six pack abs and called the 10-year-old a “little beast.” Arias says that kids are a reflection of their environments so parents should be a role model to their children.

Many people have been supportive of King and her pint-sized ambitions, often responding to her Instagram posts with positive words of encouragement mostly agreeing that King is a great role model. One mom who commented that after seeing King so dedicated to being fit and staying healthy at such a young age has inspired her four young boys to work out with her and now they all try to be healthy as a family together.

That young age, however, is why many people don’t agree with King looking the way she does. Some people have expressed concerns that King is hurting herself because her body isn’t able to handle extreme fitness yet. Another commented that they think she’s too young for that, but to each their own. Others have expressed that she’s likely being pushed by her family to work harder than she should have to as a kid.

Her father, RJ King, says those accusations aren’t true. He said they realized she had a gift when at three and four years old she would do cartwheels and other gymnastics maneuvers much more easily than other kids her age. She had exceptional control of her body early on. They don’t, however, force her into any activities that she doesn’t want to do. She trains 30 hours a week and goes to an educational program at the World Champions Centre owned by Olympian Simone Biles.

RJ King also says that his daughter does not lift weights, but instead uses only her body weight to work out and get in the physical condition that she is in. They have never restricted her diet, and she eats a well-balanced healthy diet that sometimes includes things like noodles, cookies, and ice cream. “We don’t dictate Chandler’s diet, prevent her from eating anything, or force her into sports,” said RJ King.

Recent studies show that unlike many people believe, fitness of this caliber for young children won’t stunt their growth and is actually good for them. The same studies show that kids who exercise regularly grow stronger physically and make more efficient neurological progress.

Strength coach Dusten Nelson, who works with Olympic athletes says that if a kid is wanting to do things on their own, they should be allowed, but their actions shouldn’t be dictated by their parents or other outside sources. “As a coach I have to pay attention to who or what is guiding them,” said Nelson.

Today, with one in three American kids is considered obese, should we commend this young teen for her commitment to good health or has she gone too far? What are your thoughts about Chandler King?
