Oakfield Elementary School teacher Jodi Schmidt loved seeing the infectious smile of 8 year-old Natasha Fuller as she walked down the hallway at school. The teacher, a mother of three herself, had no idea that despite Natasha’s smile, the little girl’s health was quickly deteriorating.

Natasha was born with prune belly syndrome, a condition that causes urinary tract disease and eventually requires a new kidney. The little girl had been traveling to the hospital three times a week for dialysis but had fallen into renal failure and desperately needed a kidney as soon as possible.

Making matters even worse, Natasha was separated from her beloved twin sister Brookelynn, who lived in Oklahoma with their parents. Natasha had been staying with her grandparents in Wisconsin for two years so that she could get specialized care at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Since she often got infections, Natasha kept getting bumped off the transplant list. When Schmidt learned what Natasha was going through, she knew she had to do something.

After talking it over with her husband and children, Schmidt secretly had herself tested to see if she was a match for Natasha. She then approached Natasha and her grandmother at school regarding what she had learned.

Chris thought she had been called in to discuss Natasha’s grades, so she was shocked to see what was in the box Schmidt gave her. She burst into tears when she saw what Schmidt had written on a piece of paper inside it!

Later, Natasha is called in and given the same box, and her reaction is priceless!
