We’ve all pulled something out of the washer or dryer that shouldn’t have been in there in the first place. Maybe you forgot that you had change in your pants pocket, for example. But we’ve also likely had a thing or two disappear and come out of the dryer with just one sock instead of the two we put in.

According to Cathy Hinz, her husband might have found exactly where all of our missing items have disappeared to. It seems like it is possible after all that your washing machine really is eating your socks and underwear.

Hinz and her husband own a trailer park and when one of the washing machines began acting up, she sent him to take a look. He’d worked on appliances for years helping maintain the complex, but everything he seemed to try on the washer didn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Finally, when all other efforts had failed, Cathy’s husband decided to dismantle the machine and neither of them could believe what they found inside. Packed inside the bottom panel of the washing machine were a shocking pile of socks, underwear, change, a credit card, and a variety of other objects.

Cathy says she shared photos of their discovery on Twitter and the photos went viral with thousands of people sharing the post with comments like, “I no longer feel like a crazy person for losing random socks!”

She says that in the 25 years her husband has been repairing appliances, he’s never seen anything like this. He says appliances aren’t built the way they used to be because manufacturers make more money if they build an appliance that needs to be replaced in four or five years.

He says it is important to look for appliances with a good warranty before making a major purchase, and he says, if you are thinking about taking your washer apart to see what’s inside it, be sure that it won’t void your existing warranty.
