Dogs are known for their intelligence and their total devotion to humans. These animals love nothing more than getting treats as rewards for their good behavior.

Over the past five years, Colombia’s Diversified Technical Institute of Monterrey Casanare has become a home of sorts for a beautiful black dog named Negro. The dog has become a mascot for the campus, and he keeps a protective eye on students as they go about their studies.

The school’s faculty takes good care of Negro as they shower him with food and love. They also make sure he has a safe place to sleep at night.

When Negro first got to the school, he found a small store on campus where students go to buy things between classes. Negro discovered the idea of money when someone bought a cookie for him, and this got him thinking about trying to buy something himself.

“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange,” said teacher Angela Garcia Bernal. “Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie.”

Negro is so smart that he has discovered his own form of currency! When the dog was given a cookie in return for the leaf, he realized he had found a way to buy treats for himself!

Since then, Negro has been buying treats from the store with leaves every day. Staffers at the store make sure that he only is given treats that are safe for dogs to eat, and they do limit his purchases to just a few treats per day to keep the dog healthy.
