The goal of the FOX5 Surprise Squad is to spread kindness around the U.S. and to inspire others to treat people better. That’s why the team recently decided to head to a supermarket in Las Vegas to do something beautiful for two veterans!

Reporter Dave Hall headed to the supermarket’s checkout line and first met Stephanie, a disabled veteran who is confined to a wheelchair. Down to her last $50, Stephanie barely had enough money to feed herself and her dogs, so Dave and his team paid for all her groceries! The team then shifted their attention to the man who accompanied her to the store.

They learned that the man was Stephanie’s husband Larry and that he was also a veteran who now works as a truck driver to try and support his wife.

“No vet should be going through what she’s going through,” he told Dave.

Larry tragically lost some of his brothers in the Vietnam War, and this inspired him to create a charity called Bones for Blankets which donates blankets to homeless veterans. Though Larry is low on cash himself, he likes to put others first. When Dave and his team heard Larry’s story, they knew they had to do something, so they took him down the aisles to make sure he got everything he needed.

“You served us, now it’s time to serve you,” they told him as they paid for his items.
